Behind the Veneer

Behind the veneer of everyday
The faces we put on
Is the reality of what's inside
When the days are very long

When you look at me, you cannot see
What I feel  like underneath
You only see what I project
Unless you pull away the sheet

We all hide and keep inside
The secrets that we hold
And never share those deeper spots
These things remain untold

But once, or twice, our eyes may meet
And a truth we chance to share
Unintended,  beautiful
A feeling we've been spared
