The silver maple and the oriental bittersweet in our front yard have been together a very long time, decades in fact. I'm fairly certain they're one in a lot of respects at this point.
From what I gather, the bittersweet is considered invasive, because of the way it wraps around other plants and overtakes other vegetation by smothering. These two are so intertwined at this point, I can say that's true.
Could the silver maple survive at this point if someone climbed up there and spent the better part of a day trimming off the endless bittersweet? It's interesting to consider.
People can be like that, too, can't they? Something can be sucking the very life out of us, but if we're used to it, we'll fight to keep it.
Humans are strange creatures.
